ANIMAL RESOURCE CENTER - 1615 s. Laredo, San Antonio, Texas 78207. Phone 210-351-7729 FAX: 210-223-2446. www.animalresource.org. This is a coalition formed by the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District, the Animal Defense League, the Humane Society of Bexar County, and the Veterinary Medical Association of Bexar County. The focus of this group is to provide pet spay/neuter surgeries for low income pet owners. It is located in the area of San Antonio from which the greatest number of animals are impounded and the greatest number of animal bites are reported. An education outreach is also extended from this center to promote responsible pet ownership and animal bite avoidance. The center also serves as a satellite for the Animal Control Division to allow those who wish, to surrender unwanted and stray animals. In 1997, over 3,000 dogs and cats were spayed or neutered and vaccinated. As of 2005, over 25,000 spays and neuters have been performed. Since 1997 when the center opened, a 28% decrease in annual number of reported animal bites has been experienced. Also, the number of stray animal impounded has not declined, but the rate of increase has been almost halted. We hope to work with this group more often in the future.

CASI is a non-profit, no kill shelter serving Bexar County and surrounding areas. This shelter relies on your donations to give animals a second chance. The facility provides shelter for lost, abused and abandoned animals that would very likely end up being destroyed, starving to death, or becoming victims of predators, disease, illness or injury.
Being close to each other, we share many ideas. This is our favorite bake sale and Christmas animal stocking sale group. We have also given them handmade gingerbread houses to auction. Some gingerbread houses have also acquired sponsors so that the shelter gets the money and another group (such as the Battered Women’s Shelter, Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital, SAM’s Shelter and others) enjoy eating the treat.
Pictures of the marquee and the McKee Cattery are on the web page. Just a few of the donations we have made to help improve and support this shelter include air conditioners for the cat room, a washer and dryer, cleaning supplies, food and money to keep the spay/neuter program operating. Visit their web site for great information and pictures of animals awaiting homes – browse their “want list” and give them a donation. Do you have someone who has everything and wants nothing for a birthday? A donation in their name helps you solve this problem and helps out this group. Both parties win!

Our main contact with the Humane Society has been through the plight of animals that were used in pit bull fighting rings. So, a play and party area were funded as well as zoo admittance for several groups (Orphan children’s party, a visit for the youngsters at The Whole Life Christian School and for the children at Respite Care).

Home-grown vegetables and fruits have been donated to help supplement the animal’s diet. Two new enclosures have been funded and completed (see our photos). One was a wild bird enclosure and the other was for wildcats. These were in memory of Col. (Retd.) Henry H. McKee. We have enjoyed many galas, fundraisers and benefits with Lynn Cuny and her organization. Judy donated a Texas style wreath for one of the fundraisers.
